Description
The new Rotterdam Central Station (a joint venture between: Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer and Van Schooten Architects and West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture) is an interchange of regional and international importance. The construction work was done in nine years’ time. It was opened in March 2014 by King Willem- Alexander. This new access to the city is spacious and has large windows which offers views of Rotterdam’s amazing surroundings, even the roof above the train tracks is made of glass. The station has a footbridge that connects the sixteen tracks, as well as a new passenger route of almost 50 meters wide. Every day, 110,000 people cross the railway station area, which covers 47.000 m2. The station also provides space for shops and offices (4000 m2). The underground garage is home to 5190 bikes. The station is expected sustain about 323.000 passengers daily in 2025. Rotterdammers (those born and raised in Rotterdam) have nicknamed the station after a Rotterdam speciality of veggies, sauce, fries, cheese and meat known as Kapsalon. Therefore, Central Station is colloquially known as "Station Kapsalon".
